The Nigeria men’s national basketball team, D’Tigers clinched a big victory ahead of their participation in this summer’s Olympic Games in Tokyo.
D’Tigers, led by coach Mike Brown, bagged an incredible win over the national team of the United States of America early Sunday morning.
It was their first tune-up game for the Tokyo Olympics and Nigeria secured a 90-87 win over the world heavyweight basketball side.
Point guard Gabe Vincent, Caleb Agada and forward Precious Achiuwa were the stars for the Nigerian team, with Achiuwa putting in a superb defensive effort when he blocked a Kevin Durant dunk attempt in the second quarter.
Vincent led Nigeria in scoring with 21 points, four assists, and two rebounds. Agada, on the other hand, had 17 points, three rebounds and two assists while Ike Nwamu finished the game with 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Ike Ireogbu also impressed in the encounter scoring 11 points.
Reigning Olympic champions USA were led by Durant who scored 17 points, and Jayson Tatum scored 15, Damian Lillard scored 14 while Bam Adebayo bagged 11 in the outing.
The game was Nigeria’s first-ever win over the No. 1 ranked basketball nation in the world.
And the incredible victory took place only hours after head coach Brown confidently told the press that D’Tigers are going to the Olympics to win it.
