IPL 2021: CSK sign Jason Behrendorff as replacement for Josh Hazlewood

Chennai Super Kings have brought in Australia bowler Jason Behrendorff to replace Josh Hazlewood for the upcoming Indian Premier League which will start from Friday.

Behrendorff has represented Australia in 11 ODIs and seven T20Is so far. He will play just his second IPL this time, having represented Mumbai Indians in the 2019 edition. He has played five matches for MI, taking as many wickets.

The 30-year-old left-arm pacer will depart for India next week after playing in the Marsh One-Day Cup final against NSW in Sydney on Sunday.

CSK are set to take on Delhi Capitals in their campaign opener on Saturday at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Behrendorff was brought in after Hazlewood pulled out of this year’s IPL in order to spend some time with his family.

Hazlewood was set to depart with his Australian teammates for the IPL when he decided to give this yea’s T20 tournament a miss. He said that spending months in bio-bubbles and undergoing quarantine amid the pandemic prompted him to take a break from cricket and be at home with his family.

“It’s been a long 10 months in bubbles and quarantine at different times, so I decided to have a rest from cricket and spend some time at home and in Australia in the next two months. We’ve got a big winter ahead too. The West Indies is going to be a long tour, with Bangladesh T20 tour potentially thrown on the end of that,” Hazlewood was quoted as saying to cricket.com.au.

“Then potentially the T20 World Cup leading into the Ashes, so it’s a big 12 months, as it always is with Australia, and I want to give myself the best chance to be mentally and physically ready for that. That’s the decision I’ve made, and it sits pretty well with me,” he had added.
